I took delivery of a skid plate and handlebar guards yesterday. They are the first of many planned "modifications" due to the beast. I figured that the cottage roads will kick the shit out of the bike so I'd best try to mitigate any damage flung my way from that violent stretch of Kilmar road. The last KLR made it up north once. Hardly a good go. The Wee Strom was up to the task although dropping it (which was a distinct eventuality) would have costed mucho dinero. The Bonneville on the other hand was all over the place. Hit one frost heave and it'd pogo it's way down the road with a shower of sparks for full effect.
The new KLR will in effect be custom made for the sad excuse of asphalt and gravel purporting to be navigable roads.
Hand guards and bash plate took 2 hrs to install in the Hall of Broken Bikes. Tunes on the air and heat from the baseboards were all that was required, although an aromatic Cohiba Siglo Uno would have made the evening perfect however that's a luxury better savoured apres work or maintenance or riding!
So the first assault has been launched. Ill report back with more stories from the KLR trenches later on.
